    Advice to Get Around Bucharest

Prepare for your trip to Bucharest with this helpful advice that will come in handy once you're there.

    Romanian Currency

In Romania, the official currency is the Romanian Leu (RON). While it might be tempting to bring British Pounds (GBP) with you to Bucharest, it’s best to exchange them for RON upon arrival, as they won’t be accepted anywhere. The same goes for Euros, although Romania is part of the European Union.

    Language in Romania

The language spoken in Bucharest is Romanian, but you'll find that many of the younger generation have a certain level of English, which also applies to those working in the service and hospitality sector.

Pissup has a team of guides working in Bucharest that can all speak English, so you never have to worry about any language barriers on our tours.

How to Stay Safe in Bucharest

You might be on a lad's holiday to have fun, but that doesn't mean you should sacrifice your safety. Keep note of these tips so you have a smooth trip:

  • Always have change on you when paying for a taxi, as some drivers may lie and tell you they don't have enough money to give you back.

  • Drink spiking can happen in the main nightlife areas, particularly in the Old Town. Always keep your beverages where you can see them.

  • Romania is prone to earthquakes, and although there haven't been any serious incidents in recent years, you should always know what to do in the case of an emergency.

  • Since you'll be with a big group of lads, this tends to attract unwanted scammers in Bucharest who may approach you in a friendly way. While they might seem nice, they often have an ulterior motive; just ignore them rather than give them attention.

    Bucharest Public Transport

Bucharest has a fantastically developed public transportation system of buses, trams, and subways.

  • Hundreds of buses and over ten trams operate around Bucharest and the surrounding areas. Their running hours vary based on the time of week, but they usually begin at 4:30 am and don't stop until 10:50 pm. However, more than 24 lines still run during the night on an hourly basis.

  • If you want to ride on the subway, you have five lines, all operated by Metrorex company: M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5. They connect 63 stations, so there's a high chance one will be near the hotel you're staying at. The subways run every 5 and 15 minutes, and the operating hours are between 5:00 am and 11:30 pm.

  • Some trains connect the main cities in Romania, such as InterCity (IC) and (IR), but you won't need to take them unless you're taking any day trips to Brasov.

    Taxis in Bucharest

It's best to avoid hailing taxis on the side of the street in Bucharest because they tend to overcharge foreigners. Instead, download a ridesharing app like Uber and Bolt to get cheaper fares, usually around RON 2.49 (£0.41, January 2025) per km.

Our Guide to Organising an Epic Stag Do in Bucharest FAQ

What Are the Best Times of Year to Organise a Stag Do in Bucharest?

Bucharest is a year-round city for stag parties, but the season you come may impact your experience. Summer is the most popular time to visit as the weather is hottest. Temperatures typically range from 16°C to 31°C, but occasional thunderstorms, driven by high humidity levels, can affect outdoor activities.

September or October is a better time because the temperatures are less intense, with lows of 8°C and highs of 25°C. Fewer tourists are around, too, so flight and accommodation prices are lower.

What Activities Do You Recommend in Bucharest if It Rains During the Stag Do?

Don't be surprised if you get a bit of rainfall when you're in Bucharest. Something like this may initially cause some panic, but if you have some indoor activities planned, you're ready for the worst.

Book an escape room beforehand so you have an indoor activity to bounce back on. If you need more ideas, consider organising a wine tasting or a day out at the Therme Spa.

Is Bucharest Safe for a Stag Do?

Bucharest's safety has improved a lot over the years. You might hear the odd story of something unfortunate happening to somebody who was there in the past, but these tales are probably outdated.

While some scamming and pickpocketing incidents occur occasionally, if you keep your wits about you, you'll return home safely.

What Are the Best Places to Stay In Bucharest?

When choosing a place to stay in Bucharest, you have plenty of options. The Old Town is ideal for partygoers looking to be at the heart of the action. For those more interested in sightseeing, Piata Victoriei offers a convenient base. If you're looking to save a bit of money, Cotroceni is an excellent, budget-friendly option.

What Are the Districts to Avoid in Bucharest?

Many of Bucharest's dodgy neighbourhoods are in the city's south. Some names to watch for include Străulesti, Giulesti, Colentina, Sîrbi, Gencea, and Pantelimon.

How to Get To Bucharest City Centre From the Airport

Three transport options are available when you land at Bucharest's Henri Coandă International Airport to take you into the city centre.

  • Bus: The 100 Express Line Bus is available outside the airport's arrivals and departure sections and will drop you at Piata Unirii 2 Station in Bucharest. The journey takes approximately 40 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, with tickets priced around RON 3 (£0.50, January 2025).

  • Taxi: Taxis are readily available at Bucharest Airport; they can take you directly into the city centre, with the journey only taking half an hour. The price of the taxi ride will be based on where you want to be dropped off in the centre, but usually, it costs around RON 65 (£10.81, January 2025).

How Much Time in Advance Should I Book Activities for a Stag Do in Bucharest?

When you lock in your dates for your stag, reach out to us immediately to secure your activities. Booking 2-3 months ago is best to ensure activities availability. Our most popular experiences tend to book up fast, especially during peak season in a destination as in demand as Bucharest. Getting there ahead of the crowd will help you avoid any disappointment.

What Budget per Person Should Be Planned for a Stag Do in Bucharest?

Based on our experience, between £30 and £80 per day for a stag do in Bucharest is ideal for enjoying the city's best. Bucharest is an incredibly affordable city. From food to drinks and transport, your expenses will be significantly lower than if you were visiting the average European city.

Of course, how much you spend depends on your preferences; cocktail lovers might spend more than beer drinkers, but it all evens out in the end.
